Re relationships, we took a similar view as Dave re the pump – a healthy wife is so much more attractive than a dead one. I took the husband with me to my pump training too – it helped him feel more involved and it meant I didn’t have to remember everything myself.

It could also be good to show them how engaged you are with your diabetes – put all your results into an impressive graph, show them where you have spotted and treated trends, show them what problems you are having that the pump can solve (such as dawn phenomenon).

Finally, start with the assumption that they want the best care for you – that’ll help yu relax a bit and be a good springboard for dealing with any other attitude they might have.

Although we all think we’re unique it’s surprising how many go through exactly the same at similar times.

I too had wifey and friend concerns. Firstly Mrs S appreciated that the pump has a much better chance at reducing complications so as a long-term investment it’s priceless. Yes, we’re still overcoming it’s presence in the erm ‘evening’ but we’re getting there.

Friends and strangers reaction is much simpler. Like you my D was always mine and was managed quietly without any fuss Blokes like gadgets and this is one of the coolest gadgets in the world. For the first time people are asking me questions out if interest and maybe that’s because there’s no visible needle, I think it’s easy to downplay other peoples ability to accept change and also how interested they can genuinely be in us.
