What if you do not have a iPhone or iPod Touch

I read with enriched excitement today when news broke about Sanofi-Aventis introducing their new product which physically plugs into the iPhone and iPod Touch!

It’s a tiny new USB-sized glucose meter they’re calling iBGStar.  You can read more about the iBGStar over at DiabetesMine.

So what if you are not the lucky recipient of a iPhone or any other device that this product is intended for? Can you justify purchasing a very expensive gadget so that you can run an application on it?

Whilst I believe that this is a fantastic concept, I know I would be even happier if I was the owner of one of the devices, but I can not help but feel that perhaps they need to be stand alone so that they are available to the greater mass.

What are you thoughts?  Would be great to hear them..

I am very excited about this. This is something I’ve wanted for quite some time. I have an iPod Touch and two iPhones (one for the wife). I would no longer need to carry a separate glucose meter. My iPhone now becomes the meter. I no longer have to take my BG and manually enter it for analysis. The iPhone software will have direct access to those readings.

Yes, you will need an iOS device to use this. But … their is no reason why the technology can’t be adopted for Android based phones. The challenge there will be the differing form factors of those devices.

I don’t understand what you mean by a stand alone device? A glucose meter is a standalone device. But a glucosemter does not make calls or runs apps.

Absolutely agree and hope that it opens the market for greater product innovation, especially for the mainstream.

As an iPhone user, I’m excited. I would hope that the technology could be applied to other devices as well. I have no depth of expertise to know what that entails. Just hope.

        MIke,
The smiley face thing is pretty cool. How are you doing that?

Hey Khürt, Glad you like. I found on the interweb, copied it into a text file for safe keeping.
I use a app called TextExpander to create a keyboard shortcut.

    Hey Mike,

    How is it going ?

Yeah I read about the Sanofi-Aventis iPhone Gizmo which sounds very cool indeed. It will be like most things though for us in the UK and will take ages to hit the stores dont you think ?

Take care and by the way I am just in the process of adding your site as a useful link on my web site so have a look in the next day or so and maybe you could do something similar for me ?

    Andrew
